1.             About the Section

          An independent section of Agril. Entomology was started in 1958. The section of Entomology had inherited the scholarship in teaching and research from people like Dr. Sharnagat, Dr. More, Shri Dhurve, Dr. D. B. Undirwade and now Prof. Ram W. Gawande. This section is imparting education at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.

        The march of teaching and achievements can be judged from the number of alumini it has produced successfully outside the gate of the college. Apart from regular teaching the section also conducts research in Entomology, insects, etc. and extension work.

        With the advance of time new horizons in the Entomology section will be visible and research and teaching will be proceeding towards progress and will add new chapter in the volume of learning.

 

Ø  Possess well equipped Bio-control laboratory

Ø  Production and sale of bioagents and biopesticides like Chrysopa, Trichogramma, Mallada and HaNPV from 1996.

Ø  Recommended Mallada for the management  of citrus blackfly during Ambia, and Hasta bahar.

Ø  Recommended artificial diet for the rearing of M. boninensis in absence of Corcyra eggs.

Ø  Research work is in progress on Biocontrol of Parthenium grass through Zygogramma beetles

 

2. Academic Programme:-

 

       The section is offering courses on Entomology to both undergraduate and Post graduate. There are specialized fields under which different courses and projects are conducted in partial fulfillment for award of BSc.(Agri.) and  MSc. (Agri.).

 

 

3. Infrastructure:

 

        The section has furnished staff rooms, well equipped classroom, with computer, laptop, printers, internet facility, DLP projector, Digital cameras, Research Farms, etc., which are frequently used by the faculties and students. The section has laboratories for well equipped practical purpose. Latest and state of the art laboratory equipments are available with section.

 

4. Mandate:

 

  • Teaching    :       Under graduate and Post Graduate

 

  • Research    :       Recommended artificial diet for the rearing of  M. boninensis               in absence of Corcyra eggs.  Research work is in progress on Biocontrol of Parthenium grass through Zygogramma beetles

 

  • Extension   :       Front line demonstration and agronomical extension work.

7. Students

         

The undergraduate and post graduate education is offered at the college. The postgraduate education leading to M.Sc.(Ag.) is offered at Section of Entomology. The total intake capacity for Post graduate students (MSc.) are as under

So far this section has produced hundreds of post graduates and are occupying responsible positions in different departments in India and abroad. They have brought laurels to the department by their outstanding work and achievement. The section is proud of them.

 

There are various areas in which the post graduate students do their research work in this section

 

8. Co-curricular activities:-

The  faculty of the section associates with various co-curricular activities pertaining to admissions examination, university sports, social gathering, student’s educational tours, etc.,

 

9. Research activities and achievements:-

 

        Research experiments related to entomology are carried out by the faculty of this section. AICRP trials, Inter-university trials, state trials, station trials of various crops

 

 

Achievements:-

 

       Many technologies have been developed by the teaching staff of this section for the Vidarbha Region and Rest of Maharashtra which is beneficial to the scientific and farming community. 

 

10. Extension activities and achievements:-

Besides the main function of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, the staff members are actively involved in extension activities like FLDs, exhibitions, Shivar Pheri, field days etc.

 

 

11. Research recommendations (approved in Agresco):-

          Research work is primarily based on various problems received as feedbacks from time to time and finalized in the project level meeting of Entomology discipline. Research outcome is discussed in the annual RRC and RFRC meetings and then research recommendations are released after approval in Joint AGRESCO. Entomology has contributed significantly in developing improved varieties and technologies.
