1. About the Section

An independent section of Agricultural botany was started in 1958. Shri. R.G.Joglekar was the first Professor of the section. The section of Agril. Botany had inherited the scholarship in teaching and research from people like Dr. Young man, D.N.Mehta, K.P.Shrivastava, S.S.Pande, S.G.Kolte and Dr.R.S.Bhatt. This section is imparting education at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.

The march of teaching and achievements can be judged from the number of alumini it has produced successfully outside the gate of the college. Apart from regular teaching the section also conducts research on maize, mustard, pigeon pea and lathyrus and extension work. One variety on maize PKVM-Shatak was released from this section for Vidarbha region. A total of nine recommendations on Plant physiology at University level have come out for the benefit of Scientific society and farmers.

With the advance of time new horizons in the Botany section will be visible and research and teaching will be proceeding towards progress and will add new chapter in the volume of learning.

Ø  This section is doing breeding work on crops like maize,  mustard, lathyrus and  safflower.

Ø  It has released following varieties in field crops :

Ø  Fodder grass : NG-13, NG-22, NG-5, NG-73, NG-107, NG-308 and NG-287

Ø  Cotton:  B-147, B-1007

Ø  Pigeonpea : EB-3 and EB-38

Ø  Sorghum: 22-5-16 (CMS line)

Ø  Mustard : ACN-9 Shatabdi

Ø  Safflower : N-630

Ø  Maize : PKVM Shatak

Ø  The section has prepared the depiction chart for deficiency symptoms of micro and macro nutrients in citrus and mustard.

2. Academic Programme:-

10. Extension activities and achievements:-

Besides the main function of undergraduate and  postgraduate teaching, the staff members are actively involved in extension activities like FLDs, exhibitions, shivar pheri, field days etc.

11. Research recommendations (approved in Agresco):-

Research work is primarily based on various problems received as feedbacks from time to time and finalized in the project level meeting of Agri. Botany discipline. Research outcome is discussed in the annual RRC and RFRC meetings and then research recommendations are released after approval in Joint AGRESCO. Agril. Botany  has contributed significantly in developing improved varieties and technologies. The most important achievements are briefly summarized below –

1)    Maize (PKNM-Shatak): High yielder than Manjari composite and Panchaganga. It has white colour semiflint and bold seed and matures in 94-100 days.

2)    Mustard Shatabdi released and notified in 2006 is high yielding, early maturing and character than the check variety Pusabold.

3)    Safflower : Developed 3 genetic male sterile lines and one random mating population

4)    Application of reduced dose of fertilizer 15:10:00 NPK supplemented by seed dressing rhizobium culture and PSB @ 25g/Kg seed and ammonium molybdate @ 4g/kg seed in soybean increases the yield by 26.5%.

5)    Soybean cv. JS 80-21 is tolerant to waterlogging of four days was recommended.

6)    In wheat cement dust pollution at the rate of 5g/m2/day recorded yield reduction by 6 t0 10 per cent. Three years data revealed better tolerance of varieties HDM-1553 and HDM-1593 to cement pollution.

7)    Cultivar TV-1 and C-11 of pigeon pea are recommended to perform better under water stress conditions.

8)    50 ppm concentration of paclobutrazol (cultar) as foliar sprays is recommended for higher returns.
